To bridge simulation and trials on test tracks and on the street. Omni is Latin for “all” or “every”, and the project needed to be “omni” in several ways – omni in testing off-street and on-street; omni on types of road from urban and inter-urban to rural, and omni in terms of user – vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.


Aimsun was expected to provide the project’s core traffic simulation environment, used to identify areas where testing in the real world is necessary.

Project Location

Using both RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) test track at their Culham site, and a 32km route on the road network in Oxfordshire to allow testing in mixed traffic conditions.  This includes test track, urban, rural and inter-urban roads.

Aimsun Solution

Partners Ordnance Survey developed a lidar survey of the 32km Oxfordshire route which was input into a XPI simulation environment along with an Aimsun Next model to allow the testing and validation of an AV test stack under realistic condition.  Validation testing ensured Aimsun simulations are reliable and a realistic digital twin.


The simulation environment was then used by WMG to run scenarios in the model, which were then tested in the real world either on the test track or on the 32km route.  These results were then input back into the model to calibrate and improve it. 

Benefit to Customer

Running the simulation environment allowed thousands of simulations to be run, enabling identification of edge cases that needed real-world testing. This means that, rather than spending time and resources on the billion+ test miles of autonomous vehicles that experts estimate are necessary, they could focus on the actual thousand miles that need real world testing under very specific conditions.

Reason for Success

Efficient and team-focussed collaboration between partners identified differences in approach to matters such as a common reference systems for the 3D digital twin., Further, the cooperation of partners from differing sectors allowed the development of a modular,  end-to-end process involving multiple technology stacks.
