Athens: modelling congestion pricing and its impact on the environment
To develop an innovative traffic model of the entire region of Attica in Greece to test the impacts of a wide range of projects, particularly the implementation of price policies and their environmental impact on Athens city centre.
Transportation demand and transport energy consumption have increased significantly in Greece over the last few decades following analogous trends in EU countries. The current rate of growth of the transportation sector outstrips the rate of improvement in technologies that support environmentally friendly transport, resulting in increasing environmental problems.
Energy efficiency in transportation systems is a crucial factor in the reduction of environmental pollution, especially in the case of developed economies where the transportation sector is the most significant energy consumer.
Scope and methodology
The NTUA team used Aimsun software to develop a detailed model of the whole region of Attica, including all municipalities, for simulating road traffic. This model is built with the aim of supporting energy-efficient transport decisions, to introduce transport pricing mechanisms and to accurately forecast road congestion and its consequences.
A comprehensive simulation framework allows the modelling team to assess the effectiveness of different pricing policies under varying traffic flow conditions and identify the most energy-efficient policies.
In the Athens model, the team can apply congestion pricing strategies and then evaluate them from an environmental perspective. The model is supported by custom Application Programming Interface (APIs) to introduce congestion policies, define rerouting depending on traffic conditions, validate environmental effects through the emissions produced and finally to identify optimal strategic plans.
