With the ever-increasing demand for traffic modeling, Townsville City Council (TCC) found that the resources required were getting larger and more complicated by the year, which had a knock-on effect on the technical complication of transferring information.

To mitigate these difficulties, TCC wanted a holistic, integrated approach that could minimize the resource requirements whilst maintaining the high standard of traffic studies.

Aimsun, together with industry partner, Metis Consultants, were able to fulfill that need.

The Townsville model is a travel demand model that covers the entire Townsville City area. This model was developed and/or translated from the original Townsville Strategic Model and comprised all the original functionalities of a four-step model. The model includes trip generation, trip distribution, mode split and trip assignment.

Following the development of the four-step model, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and TCC are jointly implementing the mesoscopic and microscopic-level modelling capability to the Townsville Aimsun Integrated Model.
