Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS)
C-ROADS platform: SPAIN

C-Roads Spain is a consortium led by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) and involving 23 Spanish partners, including Aimsun; the project aims to design, test and evaluate the effectiveness of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), such as warning drivers about potential risks on the roads, such as road works, stationary vehicles or adverse weather conditions.

What is C-ITS?

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) refers to transport systems, where the cooperation between two or more ITS sub-systems (personal, vehicle, roadside and central) enables and provides an ITS service that offers better quality and an enhanced service level, compared to the same ITS service provided by only one of the ITS sub-systems.

Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) use mature ad-hoc short-range and wide-area communication technologies to allow road vehicles to communicate with other vehicles, traffic signals, roadside infrastructure and other road users. The cooperative V2X (C-V2X) systems are also known as vehicle-to-vehicle communications (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (V2I) or vehicle-to-person (V2P) communications. In summary, the wireless data exchange between the different actors and ITS stations is named cooperative V2X (C-V2X) communication. It supports a number of information, warning and assistance services which will be gradually deployed in coordinated innovation phases during the oncoming years.

The Aimsun Next virtual testbed

Aimsun’s specific role is to provide a solution for the simulation of C-ITS services and V2X communications using data collected during the execution of the pilot cases. Aimsun is developing a virtual testbed platform that consists of a V2X communication API, V2X sensor configuration in the network model, and network simulation models at both the microscopic and the mesoscopic-microscopic hybrid modeling levels.

C-Roads Spain test sites

There are six test sites in the C-Roads Spain project and Aimsun participates in two of them: the AP-7 Mediterranean Highway in Girona and the M-30 Ring Road in Madrid.

These two pilots provide different social and technical challenges, as well as different mobility data sources; they require the representation of the new transport system solutions specifically designed for connected roads and vehicles in the simulation models as well as validation in very different traffic management situations.

Connected and Autonomous vehicles

Aimsun also evaluates the potential benefits of Level 4/5 CAVs in the M-30 and AP-7 pilots in terms of technology-readiness scenarios:

1) Number of connected vehicles

2) Exchange of the V2X messages

3) Granularity of the sensors

4) C-ITS scenarios that depend on ITS management measures and information systems.
