MAIN OBJECTIVESThis study was part of the EU Project SESTANTE of the Program INTERREG IIIB. The primary objective of the study is the evaluation of the impact of the expected RO/RO growing demand on the terminal operations, to determine whether the growing demand could still be managed by the current layout and operational rules, and in case it couldn�t propose alternatives. The evaluation is based on and ad hoc AIMSUN NG 1microscopic simulation model of the Port of Livorno representing to a high degree of accuracy the layout of the trailer parking areas, the road network of the port area, and the routes of the trucks from the In and Out-Gates to the assigned parking places. The simulation model characterizes the traffic demand as a function of the programmed operations at the terminal. The microscopic simulation approach tracks the movements of each individual vehicle in the terminal travelling along the feasible routes from/to the In/Out-Gates to/from the assigned parking places, allowing in this way to identify and quantify the critical aspects of the traffic operations in the terminal:
