Optimal Signals On A Motorway Junction Using TRANSYT

Abstract

The UK Highways Agency commissioned Halcrow to carry out a study of the operation of M1 Junction 19. The junction currently experiences considerable congestion at certain times of the day and queues can cause significant tailbacks onto the M6, M1 and A14, with consequent safety concerns. The overall aim of the study for the Highways Agency is to:

  • Carry out an in-depth appraisal of the congestion and safety problems at M1 Junction 19, at present and up to 2031
  • Identify viable, sustainable and costed measures to address the problems
  • Recommend a preferred strategy for action and investment

An AIMSUN model of junction 19 has been developed to aid the study. The interface with the TRANSYT signal optimisation program was used to generate optimal signal settings for some of the options tested. This paper describes the development and validation of the AIMSUN road traffic microsimulation model of the M1 Junction 19. It also presents results from some of the options tested using AIMSUN, including signalisation of parts of the junction.
