Aimsun used in advanced real-time decision support system for NYCDOT

With the aims of reducing travel time levels and variability, minimising congestion and improving pedestrian service, the New York City Department of Transportation has commissioned KLD Associates and GPI to develop a new Adaptive Control Decision Support System (ACDSS).

The system integrates on-line simulations in Aimsun with actual field traffic controllers and detectors, making it possible to optimise signal control in real time. ACDSS is able to trigger automatically embedded Aimsun simulations which provide immediate visualisation of different control alternatives and time-dependent measures of effectiveness.

According to Satya Muthuswamy of KLD Associates, “Aimsun was the ideal choice for the ACDSS because of its capability to run multiple concurrent instances (alternatives) at high speed, allow concurrent 2D and 3D views and have drop-down menus that allow virtual views from the exact locations at which NYCDOT has video cameras in the field.”

The Aimsun-based system was recently showcased at the NYCDOT booth at ITS World. Further information about ACDSS can be obtained by contacting KLD Associates.
