Legion for Aimsun, The best of both worlds

Legion for Aimsun is a new pedestrian modelling component that is fully integrated inside Aimsun. It enables traffic engineers and planners to model how vehicles and pedestrians interact at crossings, public transport (transit) stops and taxi ranks (stands). Using technology by Legion, the provider of choice for pedestrian facility simulation around the world, Legion for Aimsun inherits patented algorithms and an enviable track record of use. The insights from modelling can inform important decisions, directly leading to improved public safety, reduced congestion and smoother multi-modal journeys.

The possibility to simulate concurrently the movements of vehicles and pedestrians with Legion for Aimsun opens the door to a host of new applications:

Traditional traffic engineering applications also benefit in accuracy. Any situation in which pedestrians board and alight vehicles or interrupt the flow of traffic can be modelled using this new module.

The pedestrian movement engine in Legion for Aimsun is based on Legion's patented algorithms. Over the last decade, Legion has researched pedestrian behaviour, in the process amassing the largest and most varied collection of pedestrian movement data in the world. It has been instrumental in the planning of five consecutive Olympic Games, and is used by over half of the world’s top forty transit agencies, and by many reputable AEC consultancies. Rich in functionality, easy to use

Because Legion for Aimsun is implemented as an Aimsun plug-in, integration is seamless and there is a minimum of additional concepts that Aimsun users need to learn. Simulations of pedestrians and vehicles run concurrently, with vehicles and pedestrians being aware of each other and of signal states. Interaction is not limited to designated crossings; informal crossings (jay walking and unstriped) can also be modelled. In addition, users can model pedestrians boarding and alighting public transport and private vehicles.

Legion for Aimsun supports different pedestrian types, each preconfigured with Legion’s proprietary speed and personal space distribution data. Pedestrian Origin-Destination matrices, optional intermediate waypoints, public transport stops and crossings can be defined easily adding realism to the simulation. The more powerful editions of Legion for Aimsun also include the ability to simulate movement on stairs and escalators; queuing at ATMs, kiosks or ticket desks; and waiting inside designated areas. Obtaining numerical outputs, 2D and 3D animation is done in the well-known Aimsun fashion. Results can also be saved in Legion’s native results format and be loaded into Legion’s own software for further analysis.

The new Aimsun plug-in is available in three editions:

  • Base: this edition is included as standard in every Aimsun edition. It is limited to 1,000 pedestrians per hour making it useful for analysis of individual signalised or non/signalised crossings or public transport stops.
  • Lite: being able to include up to 10,000 pedestrians per hour as well as the ability to define vertical circulation (stairs and escalators) and other activities, this edition can be used to extend the scope of an analysis to several intersections or public transport stops.
  • Extra: with support of up to 30,000 pedestrians per hour as well as additional vertical circulation and other activities, this edition can be used to carry out analyses in shared space where large numbers of pedestrians interact with vehicles.

Legion for Aimsun also allows users to input files created in Legion’s own SpaceWorks software. What is more, when SpaceWorks and Aimsun are installed on the same computer, it is possible to simulate concurrently unlimited numbers and activities of pedestrians and vehicles.
