Aimsun 6 The integrated transport modelling software
Aimsun 6 is the only tool in the market that integrates in a single software application three types of transport models: static traffic assignment tools; a new mesoscopic simulator; and the world’s best microsimulator. Aimsun has an impressive academic, commercial and technical pedigree. Its development has been informed by more than 20 years of research, tens of scientific publications, and user feedback arising from hundreds of real-world projects to-date. Aimsun is an ideal choice for applications of any scale and complexity: from optimising a toll gate in Tokyo’s Cargo Terminal to helping control, in real time, the traffic lights around the entire ring-road of Madrid.
Aimsun is unique in its ability to fuse static and dynamic approaches within a single environment. Its blistering performance allows it to handle dynamic models of major world cities. The intuitive User Interface, logical objects, ease of calibration and impressive array of outputs compress project timescales. Featuring the most complete set of interfaces in the market, Aimsun works with most popular demand modelling, signal optimisation and adaptive control tools. And when it comes to customisation, real-time applications and research, Aimsun offers unparalleled flexibility with a toolkit that ranges from scripting to Python and C++ programming. An array of applicationsHundreds of users in government, consultancies and universities in 54 countries use Aimsun to improve the world’s road infrastructure. Examples of projects include:
True integration
Rather than advocating a particular modelling approach as better or more appropriate than another or suggesting that it can replace satisfactorily all others, we at TSS concern ourselves with two questions that we view as critical:
In line with this philosophy, Aimsun 6 features a complete set of macro, meso and micro models with the strongest integration in the market. To be clear, integration for TSS means: a single software application; a single network representation; a single database of modelling objects and supporting data; and one model file. Aimsun’s macro, meso and micro parameters can be found inside the same application dialogs. Switching from one modelling approach to another, or reusing path assignment results from a previous more or less detailed simulation is a question of one or two mouse clicks - not a “vision”. Clean, logical and feature-packed
Aimsun’s clean look and intuitive way of building models is influenced by tools used in graphic design, architecture and GIS. This makes it easier to pick up, quicker to carry out tasks with and more fun during a project. Tools like table views, filtered search, bulk edits and network checking minimize menial tasks. Features such as copy/paste, undo/redo and hyperlinks are standard. But where Aimsun truly excels is when having to deal with the nuances of a traffic modelling project:
A wealth of interfaces
Aimsun can slot right into your working environment and exchange data with the most popular CAD, GIS, transport modelling, signal optimisation and adaptive control software tools.
Aimsun can also bring in historical & real time detector data in ASCII format or connect directly to an ODBC-compliant database. LicensingAimsun is available in four editions: Small, Standard, Professional and Advanced. Licences are dongle-based and may be complemented by optional plug-ins to interface with other software, add support for more CPUs, or provide access to programming tools. Volume discounts apply when making multiple simultaneous purchases. A network of worldwide distributors provides regional sales support. Mature and reliable modelsWhen it comes to the models themselves, practitioners can feel comfortable that the algorithms in Aimsun are world-class - which means open to public scrutiny. We choose and implement models that can be, and are, subjected to exacting independent tests. Before introducing new models we carry out extensive assessments of all available alternatives with only one criterion in mind: choosing what consistently works best in the real world. Finally, as part of TSS’s commitment to openness, we not only supply every detail of our algorithms in the User’s Manual but also allow our users to substitute their own models, through the Software Development Kit (SDK). Static assignment Aimsun features a multi-class user equilibrium assignment model that supports several important tasks:
Microscopic simulation
The microscopic simulator in Aimsun features mature, best in class car-following and lane-changing models. In independent benchmarking tests Aimsun routinely comes top against fierce commercial and academic competition. Calibrating an Aimsun model is an important step and requires method and rigour - and a proportion of a project’s time - but it is a well-structured process free from obscurity. All parameters have an intuitive, real-world meaning and are thoroughly documented. There are enough parameters to do a good job of matching real-world data but not too many to turn the calibration process into a vicious cycle. Perturbations of inputs bring about robust and predictable system responses and the software includes both a calibration assistant and a network checker. From a performance point of view, the micro-simulator in Aimsun is in a league of its own: our micro-simulator runs a model of Singapore with 10,580 intersections and 4,483 km of lanes at 2-3 times faster than real time. A model of Barcelona city centre with a typical 1-hour demand micro-simulates in 1 minute (60 times faster than real time). These figures debunk the myth that micro-simulation inherently does not scale. Mesoscopic simulation
The new mesocopic simulator in Aimsun 6 provides an additional option to practitioners who wish to model dynamic aspects of very large networks. The new model works with individual vehicles and uses similar, but somewhat simplified car-following and lane-changing models which removes most of the calibration burden when compared to a micro-simulator. By modelling each section of a network as having a free-flowing and queuing part, the mesoscopic approach concentrates on key “events” and is able to advance the simulation clock between events. This simplifies the computational work and improves performance by orders of magnitude. Most importantly, the mesoscopic simulator in Aimsun bases its models on tried and tested components used in the micro-simulator. The result, as measured on our benchmark models, is a performance gain of about 450% with an agreement in outputs between the two models that reaches an R2 value of 0.94. Dynamic Traffic AssignmentApart from the ability to perform static equilibrium assignments, Aimsun features two different Dynamic Traffic Assignment schemes, which can be used in either a mesoscopic or a microscopic simulation:
During a simulation, users may designate previously derived assignments as historical routes; implement different traffic management strategies; define classes of vehicles that have different route choice behaviour; and restrict lanes for the exclusive use of buses or HOVs. |
